About Me

Plantie Mame was born during the isolation of the pandemic, and began with a bit of a house-plant obsession. By 2020, I had lost both of my parents just before I turned 50. I was also working through some menopause-related depression and wanted to do something to reconnect with community, and give back to organizations that make a difference in the community.

I have always loved drag and performing, and Halloween is my favorite holiday!

After one of my first plant swap events in 2023, I looked in the mirror while taking off my wig and makeup and thought this is way to channel my parents’ vibrant spirits: my dad’s passion for gardening, emceeing and singing, and my mom’s joyful fundraising work and community building. My mom would dress up at charity events as a whimsical "PickPocket Lady" in a floppy hat, letting kids pick toys out of her deep apron pockets for ten cents.

I have hosted plant swap and Positivity Pot making events at Dirty Franks, No Name Gallery in Chestnut Hill, and most recently at the Barnes Arboretum, and supported the William Way LGBT Community Center (WWCC) at the Flowers after Hours PHS Flower Show. We have raised funds for Unite for HER, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Attic Youth Center, WWCC, and the Barnes Arboretum.

The spark to honor my folks fully ignited when I took a cabaret class with Dito Van Reigersberg at Pig Iron Theatre; there, the grief transformed into art, blending plants, performance, and my parents' legacy of theatrical generosity into a living tribute that continues to bring people together. -Meg Rider
